Students come from Hampton, Brighton, Sandringham and across Bayside: children, teens and adults, from complete beginners to violinists switching over. Your viola teacher plans each lesson around your goals, such as a first tune or a place in the school orchestra. The first lesson is free, so you can try the instrument and ask your questions before you commit.

Viola Lesson Formats: Private, Group & Online

We understand that every student learns differently. To accommodate busy schedules in Melbourne, we offer four flexible violin tuition formats designed to suit your lifestyle and learning preferences.

Viola or Violin? How to Choose

The viola is held like a violin, but it is a little larger and sounds lower and warmer. Four differences matter when you are deciding:

  • Tuning. The viola's strings are C, G, D and A, a fifth lower than the violin's G, D, A and E.
  • Reading music. Viola music is written mainly in alto clef, which has its own pattern of note positions. Students meet it in the first lessons and learn it step by step.
  • Size. Violins come in fractional sizes, from 1/16 up to full size. Violas are measured by body length in inches, from about 12 inches for young players to 16 inches or more for adults.
  • Sound and role. The viola's lower voice fills the middle of the sound in string quartets and orchestras. Players who like harmony parts often prefer it.

We teach violin and viola in the same studio, so you can try both in a trial lesson. You can read about our violin lessons in Hampton too.

You do not need to buy a viola before the first lesson. We can advise you on where to rent or buy one in Melbourne.

Switching from Violin to Viola

Many viola players start on violin. Posture, bow hold and left-hand shape carry over, so a student with a year or two of violin can move across quickly. What changes is alto clef, wider finger spacing and a heavier bow stroke for a full sound. Students can keep playing their violin pieces while they learn viola, or move over completely.

Viola Lessons for Kids, Teens & Adults

Children and teens. Younger children usually start on violin and move to viola once their arms and hands can handle the larger instrument. Older children and teenagers can start on viola directly. We help you choose the right size and advise on renting as your child grows.

Adults. Adult beginners and returning players are welcome. If you played violin at school or in a community orchestra, viola is a natural next step. Lessons follow your goals: playing for enjoyment, joining an orchestra or string group, or working toward an exam.

Exams and Orchestra Auditions

Others prepare for school orchestra auditions, ensemble parts or a performance. After the first few lessons your teacher agrees a plan with you and reviews it each term.

Viola Lesson Fees

Private lessons start from $45 to $55 per 30-minute lesson, depending on lesson length and time of day. Discounts are available for term bookings and off-peak hours. Your first trial lesson is free.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have my own instrument before starting lessons?

Not necessarily! We can help you choose or rent an instrument, and for trial lessons, instruments are often provided at the studio.

How long are the lessons, and how often should I take them?

Most students start with 30-minute weekly lessons, but 45- or 60-minute sessions are also available for advanced levels or motivated learners.

Can I try a lesson before enrolling?

Absolutely! We offer a free trial lesson so you can meet your teacher, see the studio, and experience our approach before you decide.

Do you teach adults as well?

Yes! Many of our students are adults who want to learn for enjoyment, stress relief, or performance goals. It’s never too late to start making music.

What styles of music can I learn?

We teach a wide range of styles — classical, pop, jazz, movie themes, and contemporary hits — so you can explore what inspires you most.

What makes Aurea Music Studio different from other schools?

Our lessons are personalized, inspiring, and fun — combining technical skill with creativity. We help every student discover their unique musical voice.

Do you offer online lessons?

Yes! We provide interactive online lessons for students who prefer to learn from home or live outside the area — with the same quality as in-person teaching.

Do students get opportunities to perform?

Yes! We organize recitals, concerts, and studio showcases throughout the year, where students can build confidence and celebrate their progress.

How much do lessons cost?

Lesson fees vary depending on instrument, lesson length, and time of day.Private 30-minute lessons typically start from $45–$55 per session, with discounts available for term bookings and off-peak hours.

Can I learn viola without playing violin first?

Yes. Beginners can start directly on viola. Lessons begin with posture, bow hold and open strings, and alto clef comes in early so it feels normal from the start.

What size viola does my child need?

Violas are sized by body length in inches, not in fractions. Young players start at about 12 inches, and adults usually play 15 to 16 inches or more. Your teacher checks the fit against arm length and tells you when it is time to size up.

Is viola harder than violin?

Different, not harder. The notes sit slightly further apart, the strings need a little more bow weight, and alto clef takes getting used to. Many students enjoy the deeper tone and find it rewarding quickly.

How much do viola lessons cost in Hampton?

Private viola lessons start from $45 to $55 per 30-minute lesson. Fees depend on lesson length and time of day, and term bookings or off-peak times can reduce the price. The first trial lesson is free.

Can I take online violin lessons if I live outside Hampton?

Yes. We offer high-quality online violin lessons via Zoom. This is a popular option for busy professionals or those living in other parts of Melbourne who specifically want to study with our qualified instructors.

Do I need to buy a violin before the first lesson?

Not necessarily. For your trial lesson, we can provide an instrument to use in the studio. However, for regular practice, you will need your own instrument. We can advise you on where to rent or buy high-quality violins in Melbourne.

Do you offer group violin classes?

Yes, we offer group violin classes which are particularly important for Suzuki students. These classes complement private lessons and teach ensemble skills, rhythm, and social interaction through music.
